I thought for our first blog post I would share with you our backstory. I saw this quote recently and it almost perfectly explains why Tina and I started Land of Lincoln Bookshare.
” There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.”
Tina and I are best friends and one day we were talking about the fact that our personal book collections were outgrowing our houses. As we talked the conversation turned from “What are we going to do?” to “How lucky are we!”. I am not sure I had ever really considered how blessed I have been to have had access to books my entire life. As a toddler I was read to every day and when I could read I never lacked for books. I can remember going to the library when I was in my early teens and checking out as many books as I could carry. Fortunately for me my family took the time to teach me to love books and had the means to get them for me. Sadly, not everyone is so fortunate and that is where our nonprofit comes in.
Just to be clear we have nothing against libraries. We love libraries and they provide a much needed service, but there is something special about owning a great book. Tina told me a story that illustrates that need for ownership. When Tina’s sons were young she took them to a local shelter to donate some books and toys they had outgrown. One of those books was given to a little girl. The little girl was shocked, she asked if it was really hers to keep. Apparently, she had never owned a book of her very own. One book, given by someone who cared, could have changed that little girl’s life.
The quote above talks specifically about children, but I think that it applies to adults too. How many people out there have never been given the opportunity? For that matter, how many people already love books, but don’t have the means or mobility to go out and get them? These are the people we are trying to reach and we are hoping you will help us.
